Bob Newton shed one of his four part-time jobs earlier this month. It just happens to be from the place – KLWN/KLZR radio – where he started working back in 1969.

“Although it’s a bittersweet departure from the radio station – I’ve spent nearly my whole career there, so it’s kind of hard – actually, I’m feeling pretty good about it,” said Newton, who left the stations July 1, where he had been working as technical director. “I’ve really been burning the candle at both ends.”

That’s because Newton remains producer/engineer/affiliate coordinator for the Jayhawk Radio Network, which puts Kansas University football and basketball games on radio. He’s also part-time technical director for KJHK at KU, and is a part-time duty officer for Douglas County Emergency Management.

Newton started at the radio stations in 1969, and worked his way up to full-time station manager. When Zimmer Radio Group bought the stations in 2000, his job was eliminated and he agreed to stay on part time.

Zimmer – now, effective July 1, known as Jayhawk Broadcasting Inc. in Lawrence – has since hired a full-time technical director, Mike Mayfield, who came from other Zimmer operations in Columbia, Mo.
