From the Lawrence Daily World for July 4, 1906: “Many businesses will be closed today for what should be an outstanding Independence Day celebration for Lawrence, including a parade and many fireworks. : The city council finally has asked for bids for a new local jail to rebuild and repair the disgrace they now call a jail. It appears the work will cost about $1,000 and it will be money well spent to do away with what now exists. : It is being said this will be a Democratic year in Kansas but we choose not to believe it because the Democrats have not been able to provide enough good candidates to date.”
