New Development Code to help guide planning

There’s a new set of development rules to play by in Lawrence.

After approximately five years of discussion, the city’s new Development Code took effect today.

The code replaces the city’s Zoning Code, which had been in place since 1966.

The new code will guide planners and city commissioners on a variety of issues.

They include: when and where land uses such as single-family, industrial and retail are appropriate; pedestrian and vehicle access requirements; landscape standards; and how and when developers must notify neighbors about proposed developments.

The code is creating a transition period at City Hall.

Any development submitted to planners before Saturday will be allowed to follow the old zoning code.

Any development submitted after Saturday must follow the new code.

City planners have been talking for several months with professionals who frequently use the code about the changes.

The Planning Department also has created an informational packet each applicant receives that spells out directions on how to properly use the code.
