January ends with warm, breezy afternoon

Lawrence will get another early taste of spring this afternoon as temperatures soar into the low 60s, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“It’s well above average this afternoon,” Schack said.

However, this morning’s temperatures were a little chilly, starting out in the upper 20s, she said.

“It’s a little frosty. You might need some time to scrape off that windshield,” Schack said.

At 7:50 a.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 28 degrees, the humidity was 85 percent and winds were from the southeast at 6 mph, making the windchill 22 degrees. Winds will pick up today to 10 to 20 mph from the south.

However, the temperature will climb through the day, reaching a high of 61 by this afternoon, Schack said. The average high for this date is 41 degrees. The record high is 71 in 1989. The average low is 22 degrees for this date. The record low is minus 8 in 1985.

The average high for January has been 52.2 degrees, Schack said. That was about 13 degrees above the historical average January high temperature of 39.1 degrees, she said. The average low for this January has been 27.5 degrees, while the historical average low for the month is 20.4 degrees, she said.

“It looks like we’ll have one of the top five warmest Januaries on record,” she said.

More warm afternoon temperatures are expected for the rest of the week as February arrives, she said.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 32 degrees, with the high climbing to 55 under partly cloudy skies, Schack said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 31 degrees, with the high reaching 57 under partly cloudy skies, she said.
