Fund offers financial aid for adopting families

Families trying to adopt a child can apply for a $1,000 award given in memory of a former Lawrence firefighter.

The deadline is March 1 for applications to the Jim Carr Memorial Fund for Adoption. It was established at the Douglas County Community Foundation in 2002 to honor Carr, a father of two adopted daughters.

Applicants must be Douglas County residents. They must submit a home study compiled by a social worker. Domestic, international and private adoptions will be considered.

Single parents are eligible. Completed adoptions will not be considered.

One applicant will receive an award to cover costs, including an agency fee, country fee and orphanage donation. The grant to the winner will be sent directly to the agency facilitating the adoption.
