Temperatures in Lawrence will climb to nearly 60 degrees today. But strong winds will be howling across Kansas in from the south, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We will have a very windy afternoon. We are definitely expecting them to pick up and gust this afternoon,” Schack said.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for areas along and west of a line from Marysville to Emporia.

West of that line, strong winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected this morning through the early evening, according to the advisory.

Schack said winds in Lawrence will be out of the south from 10 to 20 mph, with wind gusts up to 25 to 30 mph.

At noon, Lawrence’s temperature was 54 degrees, the humidity was 37 percent and winds were from the south at 12 mph, creating a windchill effect of 51 degrees.

“It looks like a warm day today,” Schack said. Today’s high will climb to 59 degrees, she said. The average high for this date is 40 degrees and the average low is 21 degrees. The record low for this date is minus 10 set in 1940. The record high is 67 degrees, set in 1944 .

Clouds were expected to thicken this afternoon, she said. Winds will continue overnight, at 12 to 20 mph from the south, gusting to 25 mph, she said.

The temperature will fall overnight to 39 degrees by early Friday morning. Friday’s skies will be cloudy, with the high climbing to 57 degrees.

Showers are possible on Saturday morning, she said. There’s also a greater chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening, Schack said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 41 degrees, with Saturday’s high temperature reaching 50 degrees, she said.
