RICHMOND, VA. ? Former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick, booted from the team last week for his behavior on and off the field, was charged Monday with pulling a gun on three teenagers during an altercation in a restaurant parking lot.

Vick surrendered at the Suffolk magistrate’s office after three warrants were issued for his arrest Sunday, Magistrate Lisa Noel said.

The 21-year-old Vick was charged with three misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm, and was released on $10,000 bond.

Police said the parents of a 17-year-old boy reported that Vick pointed a weapon at their son and two others during an altercation Sunday at a McDonald’s in Suffolk, a southeastern Virginia city where Vick’s mother lives.

If convicted of all three counts, Vick could be sentenced to up to three years in jail and a $7,500 fine.

On Friday, Virginia Tech kicked Vick off the team, citing the cumulative effects of numerous legal problems and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Gator Bowl, where he was caught on tape stomping on the left calf of Louisville All-American Elvis Dumervil.

Saturday, Vick announced he had decided to turn pro.

A Virginia Tech spokesman said university officials would have no comment on Vick’s arrest.

Haslett, Tice, Vitt to Jets?

Hempstead, N.Y. – Looking to replace Herman Edwards, the New York Jets are talking to Jim Haslett, Mike Tice and Joe Vitt, all of whom were head coaches in the NFL this season. General manager Terry Bradway said Haslett, fired last week by New Orleans, spoke with Jets officials Monday. He said the team also would talk to Tice, Minnesota’s former coach, and Vitt, who went 4-7 as interim coach of the St. Louis Rams when Mike Martz left to have a heart ailment treated. Bradway also said ex-Green Bay coach Mike Sherman might be in for a later interview but was not on his early list.

Edwards, hired by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, coached the Jets for five seasons.

Taylor fined $17,000

Ashburn, Va. – Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was fined $17,000 Monday by the NFL for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Michael Pittman.

Pro Bowl QB facing surgery

Cincinnati – Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals slowly shuffled around the locker room on crutches Monday, unsure when he’d have reconstructive knee surgery and unable to say definitively that he’ll be fully recovered in time for training camp.

As for the tackle that led to it all, Palmer said Kimo von Oelhoffen did nothing wrong.

Jack Snow dies at 62

St. Louis – Rams radio analyst Jack Snow, who also was a standout wide receiver for the club, died Monday night at Barnes-Jewish hospital of complications from a staph infection.

Cubs give up on Patterson

Chicago – Outfielder Corey Patterson, once projected as the Chicago Cubs star of the future, was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday for a pair of minor leaguers: shortstop Nate Spears and left-hander Carlos Perez. The 26-year-old Patterson hit .252 with 70 homers in parts of six major-league seasons with the Cubs, appearing in 589 games. He was the Cubs’ first-round pick and third player taken overall in the 1998 amateur draft.

He started 111 games in center field for the Cubs last year, struggling with a .215 average and just 13 homers in 126 games. The Cubs demoted him to Triple-A Iowa to work on his batting stroke, and he played 24 games in the minors before returning.

Hall may go to bullpen

New York – Bruce Sutter could become the first pitcher with no career starts elected to the Hall of Fame when results of 2006 balloting are released today. With no strong first-year candidates, Sutter, fellow reliever Rich Gossage and outfielder Jim Rice appear to be the players most likely to gain election among the 29 on the ballot.

Only three pitchers who spent a large part of their careers as relievers are in the Hall: Hoyt Wilhelm (52 starts), Rollie Fingers (37 starts) and Dennis Eckersley (361 starts).

Cy Young Award winners Orel Hershiser and Dwight Gooden were among the 14 first-time eligibles on the ballot, a group that also included Albert Belle, Will Clark and Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.

Twins ask to void lease

Minneapolis – The Minnesota Twins asked a Hennepin County District Judge on Monday to rule that the team wasn’t obliged to play in the Metrodome after this season. However, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, which runs the Metrodome, said the Twins had a legal agreement to remain in the Metrodome until a new ballpark was built. The Twins contend they had no long-term agreement to play in the 24-year-old Metrodome.

Marrero joins Rockies

Denver – Outfielder Eli Marrero agreed Monday to a minor-league contract with the Colorado Rockies and was invited to spring training. The 32-year-old Marrero appeared in 54 games with Kansas City and Baltimore last season.

Astros, Miller agree

Houston – Trever Miller and the Houston Astros finalized a $1.3 million, one-year contract Monday after the relief pitcher passed a physical. The 32-year-old left-hander went 2-2 with a 4.06 earned-run average in 61 appearances for Tampa Bay last year.

Duke a unanimous No. 1

The first full week of conference play jumbled the Top 25 except for Duke. The Blue Devils remained No. 1 in the Associated Press college basketball poll Monday, as they have all season, and they were a unanimous choice for the first time. A week in which 15 members of the Top 25 lost meant the end of the second- and third-longest current poll streaks with Kentucky and Wake Forest out of the rankings. Kentucky’s run of 88 consecutive polls started in February 2001. The Wildcats (10-4) beat Central Florida, 59-57, last week then lost, 73-46, at Kansas, in the worst loss in Tubby Smith’s nine seasons at Kentucky. The Wildcats were ranked as high No. 7 this season and fell out from 19th.

Ex-Shocker Heller dead

Wichita – Ron Heller, a former Wichita State basketball standout who coached there and at Friends University, died Sunday at Wesley Medical Center. He was 68. Heller was a color analyst this season for Wichita State basketball and did his last game just over a week ago, when the Shockers lost on the road to Southern Illinois. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer 11 months ago. The 6-foot-6 Heller played for coach Ralph Miller from 1958 to 1961, scoring 1,022 points in his three seasons.

Martin leaves Red Raiders

Lubbock, Texas – One of Texas Tech’s seven freshmen has left the team, becoming the second player in a month to fall off Bob Knight’s roster. Knight said guard Terry Martin and Tech’s coaching staff had come “to a mutual agreement.” Martin played in 14 games and averaged 7.4 points, 1.9 assists and 2.8 turnovers for Tech (8-7 overall, 0-1 Big 12 Conference). Junior guard Drew Coffman also left the team in December.

Missouri back in poll

Once a regular in the AP women’s basketball poll, Missouri (12-2) finally is back in – after a 21-year wait. The Tigers got themselves noticed by beating Baylor to end the nation’s longest winning streak and joined the poll at No. 24 on Monday. Tennessee, Duke and LSU remained the top three teams.

ND’s Fasano to enter NFL

South Bend, Ind. – Tight end Anthony Fasano decided the lure of the NFL outweighed his desire for winning a national championship at Notre Dame. The 6-foot-4, 257-pound Fasano, one of the nation’s top tight ends, said Monday he would enter the NFL draft. Fasano was Notre Dame’s third-leading receiver in 2005 with 47 catches for 576 yards.

Seminole linebacker leaving

Tallahassee, Fla. – Worried about a career-ending injury, Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims will give up his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. A speedy, undersized junior, he’s listed at 6-foot and 220 pounds. Sims made 198 tackles in his three seasons.

Florida’s Leak will return

Gainesville, Fla. – Florida quarterback Chris Leak attended the first day of spring classes Monday and said he would return for his senior season.

Kelly hired at Georgetown

Washington – Georgetown hired Navy assistant Kevin Kelly as its new football coach Monday. He replaces Bob Benson, who resigned in December after 13 seasons.
