Turnovers cost No. 3 Villanova; No. 24 West Viginia pulls upset

? Joe Herber scored 23 points, and Kevin Pittsnogle had 22, leading No. 24 West Virginia to a 91-87 upset over No. 3 Villanova on Sunday.

Mike Gansey added 21 points for the Mountaineers (10-3, 2-0 Big East).

Randy Foye had 24 points, and Mike Nardi scored 23 for Villanova (10-1, 1-1). The Wildcats had 22 turnovers to offset a strong shooting performance.

“The turnovers allowed us to keep people off the offensive boards,” West Virginia coach John Beilein said.

The Mountaineers fought back from a 15-point deficit early in the second half. Pittsnogle hit a three to cut Villanova’s lead to 76-74 with under five minutes left, and Herber made two free throws to tie it. After Allan Ray missed a three-pointer, Frank Young hit a jumper to give West Virginia its first lead, 78-76, since the first half.

Herber’s layup put West Virginia ahead 84-79 with 1:23 remaining and Pittsnogle’s hook shot made it 86-81. Foye made a three-pointer to cut it to 86-84.

A three-pointer by Nardi got Villanova within 88-87, but Herber made two free throws, and Nardi committed a crucial turnover. Patrick Beilein sealed it with a free throw.

No. 1 Duke 82, No. 23 Wake Forest 64

Winston-Salem, N.C. – J.J. Redick had plenty of help, even if he appeared to be a one-man team at times.

With old nemesis Chris Paul watching from a front-row seat, Redick scored 32 points, leaving the Blue Devils one of only three unbeaten teams in Division I.

No. 4 Memphis 73, Winthrop 63

Memphis, Tenn. – Rodney Carney scored 21 points, and Darius Washington had seven of his 14 points during a key stretch for Memphis.

Carney made seven of 14 shots as the Tigers (13-2) won their second straight after losing to No. 15 Texas last week.

Wisconsin 82, No. 7 Michigan State 63

Madison, Wis. – Kammron Taylor scored 27 points for Wisconsin.

The junior guard opened the second half with a jumper and a three-pointer, touching off a 13-0 run that put the Badgers ahead 49-26 only three minutes into the half.

Georgia Tech 60, No. 11 Boston College 58

Atlanta – Zam Fredrick hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with 33.5 seconds left for the Yellow Jackets.

Craig Smith tried his best to carry the Eagles by himself, scoring 26 points. He tied the game at 55 by hitting a free throw with 55.5 seconds left.
