Grant covers care for museum’s quilts

Hallmark Cards has awarded Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., a $1,000 grant to care for a portion of the museum’s quilts.

The quilt collection is among the state’s largest, consisting of more than 300 quilts dating from the 1840s to the present.

The bulk of the collection was donated in 2004 by John B. and Marian Rose of Prairie Village. They purchased the quilts in their travels throughout Kansas. A number of the quilts will be on display throughout the year.

“This grant will allow us to take care of 40 quilts,” said curator Kerry Lippincott. “Volunteers and I will clean, catalog, photograph and properly rehouse them.”
