Oregon softball edges KU, 3-1, in 8

? Pitcher Serena Settlemier homered in the bottom of the seventh inning to force an extra inning, but Kansas University’s softball team ultimately fell to Oregon, 3-1, to conclude the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational on Sunday.

Scoreless through six innings, Oregon went up 1-0 in the top of the seventh, but Settlemier tied it with her second homer of the season.

With the international tie-breaker – a runner placed on second – in effect in the eighth inning, Kassie Humphreys took the mound in relief of Settlemier. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, a ball tipped off the glove of sophomore Betsy Wilson in right-center field, allowing two Oregon runs to score on the error.

Settlemier gave up five hits and struck out four in the first seven innings. Humphreys (1-2) struck out one, walked two and allowed no hits in the final inning and was credited with the loss.

Senior Amy Harris (2-0) struck out seven and limited the Jayhawks to just three hits in the complete-game victory. KU continues its month-long road stint this weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Jayhawks are scheduled to face Central Michigan, Cal Poly, BYU, Tennessee and host UNLV in the tournament.
