Company to install new weather monitor

? A new weather-monitoring system developed by Wichita-based WeatherData will allow emergency management officials to more accurately sound warnings in the path of an approaching storm.

Andover is set to become the first community to install the SelectWarn for Emergency Management system. It uses warning data from the National Weather Service to precisely define where sirens will sound, instead of over an entire county or region.

“The idea is to get people to pay serious attention and seek cover when the siren goes off,” said WeatherData Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith. “The tendency has been to hear the siren and go check the sky.”

The new system can also be used to alert emergency management officials to floods and chemical or biological events. An add-on to the product can even predict the path of a storm up to 30 minutes in advance.
