Friends of the Kaw awarded $20,000 grant

A $20,000 grant for further development of a river awareness and environmental Web page has been awarded to Friends of the Kaw.

The grant came from the Kansas Health Foundation, a philanthropic organization with a mission to improve the health of all Kansans. Friends of the Kaw is a nonprofit, grassroots environmental organization.

Friends of the Kaw will use the money to further develop online the Kansas River Atlas: Raising Awareness of the Environmental Health of our River System. It can be found at the Web site www.kansasriver.com.

The Web page will allow a user to click on a city or county and find information about environmental health issues related to pollution in the Kansas River; highlight best management practices of farmers, ranchers and municipalities; and develop environmental education materials.

The additional information will be available in late 2007, said Laura Calwell, the Kansas Riverkeeper and project manager.
