Mariner Girl Scout Troop 660, originally known as Ship 201, celebrated its 50th anniversary Aug. 4-6. About 70 returning and present troop members attended.

The celebration began with an informal “Reunion Launch” on Aug. 4 when returning alumnae met members and advisors.

Attendees hiked and explored Hidden Valley Camp on Saturday. There was a “Scout’s Own” ceremony, which included “a mingling of waters” from places special to the participants, and the dedication of a memorial grove in honor of troop members who have died.

A “canoe supper” took place in the First United Methodist Church’s fellowship hall. An extensive exhibit of Mariner activities was displayed by Lucy Remple McAllister. The menu included a traditional ham dish invented by earlier troop members and sailboat-shaped sugar cookies baked by current troop members. The program included: a slide show of Mariner activities from 1956 to 1996, a presentation of recent troop activities designed by Jessica Schwartz, singing of Mariner songs, and remarks by Lucy McAllister, founder of Ship 201, and her father Henry Remple, who continues to provide a meeting place for the Mariners. Keith and Lu Davis Zimmer provided music. Special guests included Ed Bishop, Carol Francis, Jackie Bogner, Bayliss Harsh, Ellyn Owen and Betty Dunhaupt, former Douglas County field director.

The weekend celebration concluded with a brunch, canoeing, swimming and kayaking at Clinton Lake under the direction of Jackie Holladay and Marty Burke, waterfront directors.
