Charges of applying a restricted pesticide without a proper commercial license were filed here against a Kansas City, Mo., firm that had been trying to repel pigeons from a North Lawrence grain elevator. The goal had been to banish the birds rather than kill them but more than 1,000 had been found dead. Officials said the charges could lead to conviction for a Class A misdemeanor.

Even though Kansas University fall semester enrollment figures appeared to hit record highs, there seemed to be sufficient housing, both public and private, for the student population. The final fall signup figure was due to be around 25,000 counting the Lawrence and Kansas City medical center campuses.
