Walker hopes to raise $30M for cancer

A man walking across the country – and maybe back again – to raise money for cancer research stopped Sunday in Lawrence.

Preston Barden, a New York resident who is raising money for the St. Louis-based National Children’s Cancer Society, stopped in town on day 61 of his New York-to-Los Angeles trek. He began his journey June 20 in New York City.

His goal, he said, is to raise $30 million for cancer research. Although he hasn’t had that kind of success yet – he’s only raised about $3,500 so far – he anticipates getting more national attention as his walk continues.

If he does finish the round-trip voyage back to New York, he’ll have a shot at the record for fastest time across the country on foot and at the longest walk, at near 5,900 miles, he said.

He’ll be in Topeka later this week.
