Lawrence enrollment is up

Headcount was taken today

Enrollment is up a little this year in Lawrence’s public schools.

A headcount taken today, the first full day of classes of students in grades kindergarten through 12, showed that there were 115 more students than last year, according to Julie Boyle, the school district’s communications director.

“We fully expect these numbers to change in the coming weeks; they always do,” Boyle said.

The official state headcount is taken on Sept. 20 and is used in determining how much state aid each school district gets.

Today’s count showed there were 10,225 students, compared to 10,110 on the first full day in 2005.

The largest drop was at Free State High School, which fell by 80 students to 1,202. Lawrence High School was down 13 students from a year ago, with 1,311 counted today.

The biggest enrollment increase was in the district’s Virtual School, which had 427 students, or 160 more students than last year.
