Cold front brings wet relief to Lawrence area

Temperatures to sink into 60s overnight

Take your umbrella along this morning – just in case.

“I think the rain may be done. But I’m keeping a slight chance of a sprinkle or two during the morning hours in the forecast,” said Sarah Jones, 6News weather forecaster.

Storms that brought about a third of a inch of rain to Lawrence since Wednesday evening are expected to move through by this afternoon, leaving behind much cooler temperatures, Jones said.

Today’s high will climb to only 88 degrees, which is well below the 100-degree-plus temperatures from earlier this week and even below the normal high for this date of 91 degrees. The record high was 109 degrees, set in 1918.

At 7:45 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 72 degrees, the humidity was 91 percent and winds were out of the northwest at 5 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 70 degrees. The record low was 55 degrees, set in 1974.

“It will be a very pleasant evening if you have to be outside,” Jones said. Overnight, the temperature will drop to 64 degrees by early Friday morning, she said.

Friday’s high temperature will climb to 90 degrees, with sunny skies, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 68 degrees, climbing to a high of 95 degrees, with partly cloudy skies.
