Students advance to national competition

Eight Central Junior High School students competed in the State History Day competition Saturday in Abilene. All eight placed first or second, qualifying to advance to the National History Day contest June 11-15 at the University of Maryland.

Placing second in the senior group documentary category were Rosemary O’Malley, Hannah Lodwick and Sara Cortese with their video on Upton Sinclair and “The Jungle”: “This is No Fairy Story and No Joke.”

Zoe Limesand, Tess Frydman, Alyson Frydman and Liza Farr placed first in the junior group documentary category with their project, “Let Everyone Be Ready to Die Like a Man: Jews Taking a Stand in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.”

Zoey Hearn-Feldman also took first with her junior individual documentary, “From Imperialism to Independence: The American Revolution of Ideas Taking a Stand for Human Rights.”

Their teacher is Jennifer Ybarra.
