Tarasova sets record in hammer

? Kansas University freshman Zlata Tarasova broke the school record for hammer throw with a toss of 195-feet, 10-inches Thursday at the Texas Relays.

The old KU record was 183-2, set by Jennifer Widerstrom.

Tarasova also hold the school’s indoor weight-throw record.

KU’s Egor Agafanov also flirted with the school hammer record with a throw of 217-8, falling just short of Scott Russell’s standard of 218-5.

Also Thursday, KU’s Janiece Gatson was 40th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.76, and Sha’Ray Butler was 47th in 1:04.57; and Julius Jiles was 22nd in the men’s 400 hurdles in 52.73, while Aaron Thompson was 35th in 53.93.

The meet resumes today.

In other KU track and field news, Kansas Relays meet director Tim Weaver announced the top two finishers at the 2005 World Championships in the women’s 200-meter dash – Allyson Felix, and Crystal Cox. – would compete in the GOLDZONE II portion of the Kansas Relays.
