Convicted felon admits having gun
A Lawrence man has admitted keeping a 9 mm handgun hidden in his sofa despite a past felony conviction that barred him from having a gun.
Justyn N’Gai Wooten, 23, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Lawrence Police discovered the gun on Feb. 11, 2005, while serving a drug-related search warrant at Wooten’s home at 523 Fla.
Officers had a tip that he kept it hidden in the sofa, according to a plea agreement. Wooten has a past felony conviction in Douglas County for possession of cocaine that disqualified him from possessing a gun.
The crime carries a maximum of 10 years in prison, but the actual sentence will be determined by where he falls on a sentencing-guidelines grid.
Prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence on the low end of the guideline range as part of the plea agreement.
A sentencing date was not reflected in court records as of Wednesday.
