Hot end to summer

Don’t put away your shorts and sandals yet. “Summer has one more punch today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We’re heading up to 95 degrees for our high temperature this afternoon — it’s kind of appropriate for the last day of summer,” Schack said. “It looks like a hot day after a mild start this morning.”

At 8 a.m., the temperature was 63 degrees and the humidity level was 100 percent. Winds were from the east at 3 mph.

“We do have some fog, but it’s beginning to burn off,” Schack said.

Schack said temperatures will quickly rise and hit 91 about noon. Winds are expected to be breezy and from the south today, about 10 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 30 mph.

But relief is on the way, she said. A cold front will be arriving Thursday.

Overnight the temperature will drop to 68 degrees by early Thursday morning. Thursday’s high will be 84 degrees. Summer officially changes over to fall at 5:23 p.m. Thursday, she said.

A cold front will be bringing in clouds and the possibility of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon in northeast Kansas, she said.

Most of the thunderstorm activity will be to the north of Lawrence in southern Iowa and northern Missouri, Schack said. There’s also a possibility of showers and thunderstorms erupting on Friday afternoon in the area. The National Weather Service says the chance for rain is 30 percent on Thursday night and 30 percent on Friday afternoon.

Friday’s morning low will be 62, with Friday’s high reaching 77 degrees.
