Hill, Grosdidier hold on to claim division crowns

It was smooth sailing for the leaders over the final round of the LAGA City Senior Open.

Jim Hill, the leader in the super senior’s division, and Mike Grosdidier, leader in the senior’s division, held their firm grips over the rest of the field Sunday at Alvamar Golf Club.

Hill maintained his six-stroke lead from Saturday’s round at Eagle Bend by shooting a final-round 81 and 156 for the tournament.

Although Hill was disappointed he did not beat the combined field of both divisions, he was impressed with the golf courses.

“Both courses were in great shape,” Hill said. “Alvamar’s greens were fantastic. And thanks to Jim Kane and Brad Demo for allowing us old (guys) come out and play.”

While Grosdidier was able to increase his two-stroke lead to win by eight, he said he had lost his mental concentration on the back nine.

“The wind was tough today. The wind was real difficult,” Grosdidier said. “And I think it just has a tendency to kind of wear on you, and it finally got to me a little bit on the back nine.”

The turnout for the 2005 City Senior’s Open nearly doubled the biggest field the tournament had in previous years.

LAGA president Kyle Taylor says he hoped the newly formed super senior’s division and a women’s division would increase the tournament showing.

“Next year we would like to see maybe 50 to 60 of the senior men, would be great,” Taylor said. “And maybe next year we’ll have twice as many women.”

“There are more senior players in Lawrence, and we still need them to come out and support this tournament.”
