Magazine sellers posing as journalism students

Lawrence residents should be alert to people attempting to pass themselves off as Kansas University journalism students and trying to sell magazine subscriptions.

“The journalism school is not going door to door soliciting for anything,” said Ann Brill, dean of the School of Journalism.

Periodic reports of such soliciting have been received over the past several weeks, Brill said. The most recent incident occurred last week, she said.

In some instances, residents have been told the “students” needed to raise money so they could go to Los Angeles, Boston or other cities so they can pick up a special award. In another incident, people were told the money was going to be used for a trip to London, Brill said. Other reasons also have been given for the solicitations.

If people encounter the solicitors, they should call Lawrence Police, Brill said.
