Possible shooting under investigation

Lawrence Police are investigating a possible shooting in West Lawrence late Thursday after one woman was injured.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical workers load a woman into an ambulance outside of 618 Eldridge St. The woman suffered a gunshot wound and was airlifted to a hospital.

At 10:22 p.m., emergency dispatchers called officers to the 600 block of Eldridge Street after a report of a possible gunshot victim.

Officers secured the scene about five minutes later when dispatchers called in a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical team. Minutes later, medical authorities transported a woman by ambulance.

Just before 11 p.m., a LifeStar helicopter transported the victim from the Free State High School parking lot, but her hospital location was unavailable.

At the scene at 10:50 p.m., Police Capt. Steve Zarnowiec said he could not confirm the incident was a shooting because no medical assessment had been done. He would not release the victim’s name or age.

The captain said officers would try to locate “persons of interest” who may have been present when the incident occurred.
