Schenker scores five goals in Bombers win

The 6U Bullets had no answer for Reed Schenker of the Blue Bombers Saturday at Youth Sports Inc.

Schenker scored five goals to help the Blue Bombers pull off the 6-3 victory over the Bullets.

The first seven minutes of the opening quarter were a defensive struggle for both teams. The strong defense of Bullets Collin Champagne and Mason Robb opened up scoring opportunities, but the Bullets were off-target on their shots.

During the last minute of the quarter, Schenker struck fast for his first goal of the game.

On the ensuing Bullets kickoff, the Blue Bombers returned the ball all the way down the field, just feet away from their goal. All six players on the field bunched up around the ball, and Schenker somehow toe-poked the ball out of the pack and into the goal as time expired in the quarter.

The Blue Bombers were unable to carry their final-second success in the first quarter over to the second quarter. Blue Bomber Leah Wethington highlighted the second quarter with tenacious defense, continually stealing the soccer ball from the Bullets attackers.

The first half may have been dominated by defense, but the offense ruled the second half.

The Bullets battled back with the first two goals of the third quarter. Blain Pattin fired a shot into an empty net to cut the Blue Bombers’ lead in half.

Pattin didn’t score the second goal for the Bullets, but he did have a hand in it. He threw the ball in from the sideline right to the feet of Ethan Bradford. Bradford turned toward the goal and slid the ball into the net to tie the game.

Schenker had an answer for the Bullets, and the answer was his third goal of the game, which ended the third quarter. He then turned up the pressure at the start of the final quarter. Schenker broke free on a breakaway but fell down as he was running. He had just kicked the ball before falling, and the ball had enough momentum to roll into the goal.

Schenker got up, dusted himself off and got right back to work scoring goals. He scored his third goal in a row to build the Blue Bombers’ lead to three goals.

Wethington chipped in on the scoring action with a lot of help from Schenker. Schenker dribbled the ball all the way to the goal, and Wethington was waiting there for the ball. She tapped it in for her first goal of the game.

Although Bradford was able to score one more goal for the Bullets before time expired, his efforts weren’t enough as his team fell to the Blue Bombers 6-3.
