Many Douglas County students participated in the 73rd Kansas Junior Livestock Show, which was Sept. 23-26 in Wichita. Jason Miles, Lawrence, received a $1,750 scholarship.

¢ Kansas University piano student Nick Susi recently won first place in a competition that gave him a spot in a recent symphony performance in St. Louis.

Susi, a freshman studying piano under Jack Winerock in the Department of Music and Dance in the School of Fine Arts, recently won first prize in the 2005 Very Young Artist award competition with his performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for piano, trumpet and strings.

Susi performed with the Webster University Symphony Orchestra Oct. 16 at Webster University in St. Louis.

¢ Karen Anne Woolery, Lawrence, has accepted membership in Golden Key International Honour Society. The society provides academic recognition to college juniors and seniors in the Top 15 percent of their class.

¢ Megan Rytting, daughter of Howard and Kay Rytting of Lawrence, recently won first place in the student poster contest at ESRI’s Southwest Users Group Conference in Park City, Utah, for a road map of Kansas that she made for a class while attending Brigham Young University. The awards ceremony was Sept. 28. ESRI is a software company which produces aids for geographers. Megan is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School, and graduated in August from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

¢ Travis L. Grammer, a 1996 Eudora High School graduate, was advanced to chief fire control technician in a pinning ceremony Sept. 16 at the Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, Calif.

Grammer, of San Diego, is stationed at Naval Submarine Base in Point Loma, Calif. In December, he will be reporting to his new duty station aboard the Submarine Tender USS Frank Cable (AS-40), homeported in Agana, Guam.

Grammer originally enlisted in the Navy in July 1996. He re-enlisted for an additional six years in a ceremony Sept. 23 at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma, Calif.

Grammer’s wife is Lisa Soper-Grammer. He is the son of Patricia Hadl Gifford, Eudora, and Tom Grammer, Kansas City, Mo.

¢ Annie Kettle, Lawrence, is performing with the St. Olaf Orchestra during its fall tour. Kettle is a junior music education major at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and plays with the horn section.

¢ Joel Beard and Merry Chadwick, both of Lawrence, will perform as members of the St. Olaf Cantorei Choir in the five-state tour of the Sing For Joy hymn festival “Songs of Grateful Praise.” They attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

¢ Several area students are members of the Kansas University Chamber Choir, which recently toured the state. The choir performed Oct. 18-20 in Wichita, Pratt, Meade and Dodge City. Those from Douglas County are: Jedidiah Kruger, Baldwin; and Brandon Bowman, George Brahler, Lynda Canaday, Nathan Dame, Katherine Naramore, Christopher Orlando, Gregory Ramsdell, Heidi Schellman, Henry Smith, Harrison Swartz and Christopher Trepinski.
