HOW THEY SCORED

First Quarter

3:05 – Ryan Murphy 21 run. Free State used eight plays on its first drive that was set up by a blocked punt by Christian Ballard. Murphy originally was back to pass but could not find an open receiver. Over pursuit by the defense left the left side of the field empty, and Murphy ran uncontested to the end zone. Mike Vaughan kick. (Free State 7, Olathe Northwest 0).

0:11 – Cameron Cupp 10 run. A 39-yard pass from Josh Sims to Matt Morgan got ONW down to the nine-yard line. After two initial stops by the FSHS defense, Cupp got great blocking from his receivers and ran the left side for the touchdown. Brandon Monroe kick. (Free State 7, Olathe Northwest 7).

Second Quarter

6:31 – Brett Lisher 1 run. Five plays after a fumble by Lisher on a 44-yard reception, the Ravens caughed up the ball back to the Firebirds at the 15-yard line. Lisher leaped over the line for the second FSHS touchdown. Vaughan kick good. (Free State 14, Olathe Northwest 7).

6:19 – Donald Smith 77 kick return. Following the Lisher touchdown, Smith used great blocking to burst past the Free State kick coverage. Monroe kick good. (Free State 14, Olathe Northwest 14).

6:07 – Murphy 81 kick return. Murphy followed ONW kick return with one of his own. He had a hole in the middle of the return and ran all the way to the end zone untouched. Vaughan kick good. (Free State 21, Olathe Northwest 14).

0:29 – Sims 2 run. After the Firebirds were stopped on fourth down at the 35-yard line, the Ravens put together a 10-play drive. Sims took the ball right over the center. Monroe kick good. (Free State 21, Olathe Northwest 21).

Third Quarter

8:27 – Ryan Murphy 17 pass from Brian Murphy. A poor kickoff put the Firebirds at the 42-yard line and took them only eight plays to score. Off a half-back toss, Brian Murphy looked and saw his brother, Ryan open for an easy six. Lisher pass from Ryan Murphy good. (Free State 29, Olathe Northwest 21).

3:03 – Rodney Kenner 3 run. A 37-yard run and a 15-yard facemask penalty put the Ravens inside the Firebirds’ 35-yard line. After converting on a fourth-down play, the Ravens took four more plays to get Kenner into the end zone. Max Williams pass from Sims. (Free State 29, Olathe Northwest 29).

Fourth Quarter

10:35 – Kenner 8 run. The Ravens took their first lead after recovering a Ryan Murphy fumble and driving 50 yards. Kenner followed his blockers off the right side for any easy touchdown. Monroe kick good. (Olathe Northwest 36, Free State 29).

3:08 – Lisher 16 pass from Ryan Murphy. A weak punt coupled with a 14-yard return set FSHS up at the 28-yard line. Needing to convert on a fourth down play, Ryan Murphy found Lisher for a six-yard gain. The next play Ryan Murphy took a bootleg out right and Lisher beat his coverage to take run in for the score. Vaughan kick wide right. (Olathe Northwest36, Free State 35).
