Elevator in compliance with air quality laws

Robert Wiseman, a supervisor at AB Coker, sweeps up corn dust that blows into the warehouse from a nearby grain elevator.

An East Lawrence grain elevator might be showering corn dust on its neighbors, but state officials said Thursday the facility complied with state air quality laws.

The South Lawrence Co-op elevator had provoked complaints this week from workers at nearby AB Coker Co. warehouse, 1923 Moodie, above. Their complaints were featured in an article in Thursday’s Journal-World.

“We did send out an inspector today and did determine they are in compliance,” Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said Thursday.

The co-op is small enough not to need an air permit, she said.
