Smith advances to title match

? Kansas University sophomore Stephanie Smith advanced to the championship match of the flight E singles bracket, pacing the Jayhawks during the first day of the Hoosier Classic. Smith beat Murray State’s Anne Pennington and Kansas State’s Tereza Prochazkova on Friday, and will face Murray State’s Maria Perevoschilkova for the title.

Freshman Edina Horvath and junior Ashley Filberth each lost early matches but advanced to the consolation championships of their brackets.

“Obviously, we are very pleased with Stephanie’s play today,” KU coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “Ashley and Edina were also impressive battling back after dropping their first match.

“We faced some very tough competition today, and although we may not have had the outcome we were hoping for in the opening matches I feel that we battled hard and played well throughout the day.”

The Jayhawk doubles teams will play today, and the finals of the other matches will conclude Sunday.
