Free State student suspended for gun

A Free State High School junior was suspended Monday after she was found with a handgun in her backpack, school district officials said.

A Free State administrator and a school resource officer searched the student’s backpack after receiving a tip from another student. The gun was not loaded and no ammunition was found, officials said.

The student told school officials she had not intended to harm anyone. She said she was carrying the gun because of a recent fight she had with an ex-boyfriend who does not attend Free State.

The student was suspended pending a formal disciplinary hearing in accordance with district policy.
