Highway Patrol bust nets $4M in cocaine

? A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper found a total of more than 100 pounds of cocaine Monday after stopping two separate vehicles on Interstate 70 near Hays.

The patrol said a trooper saw two out-of-state vehicles apparently traveling together on the interstate at 12:42 p.m. He stopped the first vehicle two miles west of Hays, where he found about 50 pounds of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment in the car, the patrol said.

The second car was stopped less than a mile east of Hays, where another 53 pounds of cocaine was found in a hidden compartment. Total street value of the drugs seized in the two vehicles was estimated at $4 million, officials said.

Eder Zamudio-Carrillo, 19, and Archy Beltran-Lugo, 32, both of Phoenix, were arrested in the vehicles. They were being held in Ellis County jail on $150,000 bond each.

Assistant County Atty. David Basgall said the men would be charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and drug tax stamp violations, both felonies.
