Lawrence City Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets ¢ Sunflower Broadband Channel 25 ¢ Meeting documents online at www.lawrenceks.org

Bottom line

Commissioners will receive a draft request for proposals for reuse of two fire stations that will be vacated next summer. The city will accept proposals for the long-term public and/or private use of the buildings.

Background

Fire Station No. 4, 2819 Stonebarn Terrace, is being relocated to 18th Street and Wakarusa Drive and will be vacant in the summer of 2006. The building will be listed as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places because of the relationship to Grover’s Barn, formerly an Underground Railroad site, which is part of the fire station. Fire Station No. 5, 1839 Mass., has been an active fire and medical response station since 1928. When new Fire Station No. 5 at 19th Street and Stewart Avenue is completed in the summer of 2006, this facility will be vacant. The building will be listed on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places.
