Slain Kansas soldiers set to be honored

A memorial to two soldiers who died in Iraq will be dedicated Tuesday in Atchison.

The dedication ceremony will take place one year to the day after Sgt. 1st Class Clinton Wisdom and Sgt. Don Allen Clary, members of the Kansas National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery unit, were killed in action.

Speakers at the ceremony will be Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, Kansas adjutant general, and Charles A. Duelfer, former chief weapons inspector in Iraq. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in the National Guard Armory, 405 N. 17th St.

Wisdom and Clary were killed while escorting a convoy. They attempted to stop a car bomber headed toward the convoy and intercepted that car with their own vehicle.

Both men were posthumously promoted and awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and other medals. Both have surviving family members.
