Summer food program offers lunches this week

The Lawrence Summer Food Program, which provides free meals for youths age 18 and under, will kick off this week.

Adults may also participate, at a cost of $1.25 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch. An adult must accompany children under age 4.

The times and schedules are as follows: Beginning at noon Tuesday, lunch will be served at the East Lawrence Center, 1245 E. 15th St., and South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass. These sites will serve Monday through Friday through July 29.

The Boys and Girls Club, 1520 Haskell Ave., will serve breakfast from 7:45 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m. June 6 through July 29. Also starting June 6, breakfast and lunch will be offered at New York and Woodlawn schools. Breakfasts will be served from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at New York School and 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at Woodlawn School. Lunches at both schools will be offered from noon until 12:30 p.m.

The Summer Food Program is open to anyone who arrives at a meal site. No qualifying factors are involved. For more information, call Susan Krumm at K-State Research and Extension office, 843-7058.

Orthodox Church school produces two graduates

Sophia Academy graduated two students in ceremonies May 21 and 22. The graduates were Nathan Mack and Mary Phillips.

The academy, 846 Ill., Suite A, is a small private school operated by the ministry of St. Sophia Orthodox Church in Lawrence.

Resident reappointed to state volunteer panel

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has reappointed Lawrence resident Matt All to the Kansas Volunteer Commission for a three-year term.

The Kansas Volunteer Commission was established in 1992 to promote volunteerism. It develops a service plan for the state and administers grant programs.

Before being appointed to the volunteer commission, All served on the board of directors for Health Care Access. He also previously served as the assistant insurance commissioner for the Kansas Insurance Department. Currently, he serves as the chief counsel for the office of the governor.

Ottawa University plans relocation

Ottawa University will relocate its Kansas City campus to make room for more students.

The new space, 18,075 square feet, is at 4370 West 109th Street in Overland Park will open in August. The new facility will include eight classrooms, three breakout areas, a student resource room and administrative offices.

The current facility is 12,298 square feet at 10865 Grandview Drive in Overland Park.

The Kansas City campus currently serves about 2,100 students annually and has increased about 15 percent a year.

Professor awarded cancer research grant

A Kansas University faculty member has received a $720,000 grant for cancer research from the American Cancer Society.

Lisa Timmons, assistant professor of molecular biosciences, and three colleagues from the KU Medical Center received the grant, which will provide funding over the next four years.

Timmons’ research focuses on determining specific roles RNA plays in cancer development.
