Craig and Kristina Shatswell, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Kali Mei Ling Shatswell, born May 4, 2005, in Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She has a brother, Alex Shatswell, 7, and a sister, Abigale Asiu Shatswell, 1.

Lia DeRoin, Lawrence, a sophomore in the School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., was named to the dean’s list for the 2004-2005 winter quarter by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Corrie Erin McDaniel, Lawrence, made the winter quarter dean’s list at Seattle Pacific University by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Justin Hamm and Jamie Grant-Hamm, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Jaden Lee Hamm, born Feb. 17, 2005, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Grandparents are Jim and Leslie Grant, Eudora; and John and Lenette Hamm, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Mary Grant, Eudora, and Howard and Leila Bloxham, New Mexico.

Brian and Jennie Nash, Montgomery, Ill., announce the birth of their daughter, Kaelyn Joy Nash, born May 3, 2005, at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, Ill. She has two brothers Nathan, 3, and Landon, 1.

Grandparents are Phyllis and Dick Sullivan, Aurora, Ill., and Al and Barbara Nash, Lawrence. Great-grandmother is Ala Dell Nyman, Lawrence.

Chris Durkin, Eudora, and Matthew Nutter, Lawrence, received scholarships at Pittsburg State University for the fall 2005 semester. Durkin, son of Don and Monica Durkin, received the Alumni Legacy Book Scholarship. Nutter, son of David and Ann Nutter, received the Alumni Legacy Book Scholarship, Academic Achievement Award and Mildred Vance Legacy Award.

Joel Beard, Jerry Chadwick and Anne Kettle, all of Lawrence, were recognized for academic achievement at St. Olaf College’s annual Honors Day convocation May 6.

Beard also participated in a poster session that featured student research at the sixth annual St. Olaf Science Symposium.

Gary Freeman, Lecompton, received the Don Fuertges Award for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletic Training at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina.

The award is given to a student majoring in health, physical education and recreation or athletic training who has satisfied the academic criteria at the completion of the junior year. The basis for the selection is involvement in extracurricular activities, student leadership, participation in professional organizations, and evidence of academic competencies in these fields. Selection is made by faculty.

Washburn University announces the following area students, who are education majors, received scholarships: Keri Lauxman and Alexis Pike, Lawrence; Sara Hoppe, Overbrook; and Shari Hollingshead, Ozawkie.

The Old West Lawrence Applause committee announces properties that have been selected for spring honors. Signs have been placed at the properties to recognize their efforts. The honorees are:

  • 620 La. Katharine Weickert and Deb Graber have improved their front and back porches, painted the house and maintained a lovely garden.
  • 733 Miss. Richard Koester has planted a new front hedge and filled the verge with pachysandra.
  • 737 Maine. Gregory Thompson and Tanya Kulaga have replaced the old sidewalk in front of the house and installed new walkways up to and around the house. They replanted the lawn and put in nice plantings across the front of the house.
  • 828 Ark. Michael Arp has painted his house with attractive colors, put in new walkways and a garden that wraps around the south side of the house.

Scott Smith, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo.

He is the son of Mark and Bunny Smith and is a 2000 Free State High School graduate. Smith plans to perform with his band Full Day Affair and record with Shock City Records of St. Louis.

Stephanie Trepinski, Lawrence, a senior at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, is one of 50 students, faculty, and staff to receive two awards at the annual Dean of Students Leadership Recognition Ceremony.

Trepinski, a 2001 Free State High School graduate, received a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the university for her work as an orientation leader during the summer of 2004. She also was honored with the Unsung Hero Award from the Office of Student Activities for her involvement in campus organizations.

Trepinski will graduate May 7 with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism.

Rebecca Bennett, Lawrence, has received an Associate of Occupational Studies degree in computer aided drafting technology at Vatterott College in Kansas City, Mo.

Abram and Sarah Chrislip, Lawrence, announce the birth of twin sons, Caleb Jackson and Simeon Caedmon, born on April 4, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Grandparents are Phil and Kay Schonberg and Mark and Diane Chrislip, all of Eudora.
