Plastics firm eyes former E and E Display building

PackerWare Corp. is looking at options for relocating its warehouse from Topeka to Lawrence.

The move would not mean more jobs for the company, but it could occupy a major building — possibly much of the now-vacant former E and E Display Group building on East 29th Street.

Investment groups are looking into buying the building, the bulk of which then could be leased to PackerWare.

“There haven’t been any decisions made there,” said Jim Kratochvil, executive vice president and chief financial officer for PackerWare’s parent company, Berry Plastics Corp. “We look at a lot of things and that’s something that’s being handled more at a local level.

“Until we make a decision about what we want to do and how we want to do it, we’re fairly guarded about giving any information out.”

The owner of the E and E building, White Property Management, is working on cleaning up final details to prepare for a possible sale. Tuesday night, Lawrence city commissioners will consider approving the removal of a utility easement to help clear the path for a such a transaction.

The building at 910 E. 29th previously had a contract pending, but the prospective owner backed out. Now there are “a number of serious buyers looking at the property,” although no contract is in place, said Kelvin Heck, broker for Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group.

“This is one of those details before we can actually get to the closing table,” said Heck, who declined to identify potential buyers.

PackerWare has reviewed its warehouse operations every two years for the past decade, but the latest round of reviews has led to examinations of a variety of properties.

Among them is the E and E site, vacant since the business closed in July 2004 and is listed for sale at $4.2 million. E and E, a manufacturer of store displays and fixtures, was founded in 1953 and had as many as 300 employees in 1998 before it struggled with slumping sales and a sluggish economy following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

PackerWare leases its 200,000-square-foot warehouse in Topeka. The warehouse typically has about 20 employees, all of whom work out of the Lawrence plant.
