The annual Friends of the Lawrence Public Library book sale will be March 31 through April 9. The library needs volunteers to help with the sale of thousands of books, CDs and records. The sale helps the library raise money and buy special books and equipment, finance literacy events, and help special programs. This year, a special sale tent will be featured, and a team of volunteers is being assembled to raise the sale tent and take it down after the sale’s completion. The tent will be assembled from 7:30 a.m. to noon March 29. The tent will be taken down from 7:30 a.m. to noon April 5. Volunteers for this project should be skilled with basic tool use.

Immediate volunteer needs

• The Roger Hill Volunteer Center has announced activities for this year’s National Volunteer Week, April 17-23. This year’s national theme is “Inspire by Example.” A Community Volunteer Fair will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 19 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. The free event is open to the public. Volunteer coordinators from dozens of local nonprofit agencies will be on hand to speak with potential volunteers about their programs’ needs. On April 23, the Spring Day of Caring will take place. This annual event matches volunteer groups formed by friends, co-workers or others to half-day volunteer projects that address the needs of local agencies and the people they serve. • Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., needs additional volunteers in Miss Lizzie’s gift shop and new door-greet volunteers, particularly during the weekday mornings and afternoons. In the gift shop, volunteers assist customers, make sales and keep the merchandise displays looking great. Greeter volunteers welcome visitors to the museum and provide directions and information. • The food pantries at Salvation Army, Penn House and the Ballard Center report that they are low on high-protein foods such as tuna and other canned meats, peanut butter, beans, meals in a can and cereal. The pantries do not need green beans or corn. These pantries serve the nutritional needs of low-income families and would appreciate high-protein food donations. Food donations may be dropped at Salvation Army, 946 N.H.; Penn House, 1035 Pa.; or Ballard Center, 708 Elm St.
• The Salvation Army needs volunteers to assist with its nightly shelter services. Volunteers are needed to assist with hot meal preparation and serving meals to shelter clients. Volunteers also can help with checking in clients as they arrive to stay in the overnight shelter, particularly during the busy check-in hours of 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, call Vivian on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 843-4188.
