Downtown Lawrence shows Irish side on St. Patrick’s Day

Lawrence resident Tracie Miller knew her viewing spot for the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade would be a good one.

“My husband parks the truck earlier in the day and he drops us off later,” she said Thursday. “I’ve had people calling me asking where we are so they can sit with us.”

The SandBar's float of a car rolls down Massachusetts Street during the St. Patrick's Day Parade Thursday in downtown Lawrence. This year's parade had 108 entries.

Thousands of other Lawrence residents joined the Millers downtown Thursday to see the parade, which included 108 entries, the most that parade announcer Hank Booth could remember.

“And there were some extras just walking down the street,” he said.

Windy conditions prompted some parade-goers to leave or find a different spot. Others took a stand against the elements.

Above, members of the Kansas City Drum Corps, annual participants in the Lawrence parade, march downtown Thursday.

“It’s windy, but it’s OK,” said Taylor Johnson, 11.

Johnson joined his mother, Heather Johnson, and their dog, Auggie, along with other friends. Temporary green dye covered Auggie’s white fur.

“We like to get a little crazy on St. Patrick’s Day and had to put some green on the dog,” Heather Johnson said.

The parade included everything from children dressed as Vikings to politicians driving cars to marching bands. It also included several equestrian entries, including the “Wild Women of the Frontier.”

Levi Booth, 1, son of Angi Booth, Lawrence, shows his Irish spirit.

Employees at downtown stores and restaurants hit the sidewalks to enjoy the parade. Many didn’t have customers during the event.

“Everybody is outside,” said Sarah Saling, a waitress at Addis Ababa Cafe. “So, we’re outside watching the parade too.”

Saling joked that kitchen staff members were trying to find ways to make food green.

“We were looking for green food coloring,” she said. “But we didn’t find any.”
