Julian J. Spangler, of Boy Scout Troop 53, was recognized during an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony March 6 at the First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. Guest speaker was Bryan Spangler, his brother and fellow Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout award is the highest honor given by the Boy Scouts of America.

Spangler has earned 31 merit badges, the Mile Swim Award and served in various leadership positions. He also is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout’s Honor Camping Society. He has attended Camp Alexander in Colorado three times and participated in high adventure trips to Sea Base in Florida, Sommers Canoe Base in Minnesota, and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

To become an Eagle Scout, Spangler had to complete a community service project. He designed and constructed bluebird and purple martin houses at Southwest Junior High School in Lawrence.

As a sophomore, Julian plays soccer and swims for Free State High School. He also sings in the Sophomore Men’s Choir. He is the son of Ron Spangler and Phyllis Buchele, Lawrence.

Cub Scout Pack 3059, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, had its annual Blue and Gold Awards Banquet Feb. 27 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. A presentation of Native American dances was performed by Daryl Jack, C.C. Whitewolf and Ronnie Goodeagle Jr., of Haskell Indian Nations University. The following Webelos bridged to Boy Scout Troop 59: Daniel Clausing, Kyler Hendricks, Patrick Keizer and Randy Walter. They also earned the Arrow of Light Award, the highest award offered in Cub Scouts.

Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to the Lawrence Catholic School PTO, had its Blue and Gold Banquet Feb. 12 in the social hall of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Jonathan Fitzgerald, Brady Murrish, Jacob Pfeifer and Lucas Vogelsang received the Arrow of Light Award. These recipients were given a time capsule to put their Cub Scout memorabilia in and to help celebrate 75 years of Cub Scouting. All Cubs were given a tie slide with the 75th anniversary sticker.

Brady Murrish and Lucas Vogelsang bridged to Troop 59 and were welcomed by Scoutmaster Mark Stogsdill. Jacob Pfeifer bridged to Troop 55 and was welcomed by Deb Vannicola, committee chairwoman, and Joseph Vannicola, senior patrol leader.

The Rev. John Schmeidler presented religious awards to the following Scouts: August Murphy-Beach, Andrew Chavez, Jack Powell and Kyle Vogelsang, Light of Christ; John Abney, Franklin Brou, Jack Lange, Kolby Murray and Nathan Shobe, Parvuli Dei (Child of God).

Bruce Murrish and John Pfeifer received their Webelo Den Leader knots. Bruce Murrish also received the Cub Scouter knot for his previous service to the pack.

Top sellers of the popcorn fund-raiser were: August Murphy-Beach, first; Jack and Jared Lange, second; and Jacob and Clayton Pfeifer, third.

Many Cub Scouts participated in “Valentines for Vets,” a project organized by Chris De Grassi, Tiger Cub den leader, who delivered the valentines Feb. 11 to the VA Medical Center in Topeka. The valentines were passed out by the Kansas State University football team.

Boy Scouts 14 and older from Troop 55, chartered to the Westside Presbyterian Church, enjoyed skiing Feb. 18-21 in Eldora, Colo. Scouts who attended were: Ted Olson, Bryant Denning, Austin Winn, Will Armstrong and Willie Frick. They were accompanied by adult leaders Jerry Ohlemeier, Donna Olson and John Frick.

Cub Scout Pack 3370, chartered to the Deerfield PTA, participated in the annual “Scout Night with the Comets” on Feb. 19 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo. Seventy Scouts, friends, and family members watched the Kansas City professional indoor soccer team defeat Philadelphia. The pack provided the color guard during the pregame ceremonies. Scouts who presented the colors during the playing of the national anthem were Kenneth Palmer, Alex Houston, Aaron Simon, Tyler Robbins, John Bennett, Logan Cherland, Josh Kallenbach and Brandon Wilson. The Scouts were accompanied on the field by Cubmaster Scott Braden. Brad Simon helped prepare the boys for their presentation.

Boy Scout Troop 62, chartered to the Linwood Lion’s Club, elected officers on Feb. 14. The new leaders are: Clinton Kissinger, senior patrol leader; Ryan Ellis, first assistant patrol leader; C.J. King, second assistant patrol leader; John Hopkins, scribe and treasurer; Levi Draper, quartermaster; Logan Ross, photographer; Josh King, assistant photographer; Brian Pemberton, librarian; Paul Schlagel, chaplain’s assistant; Skylar Ross, bugler; and Joe Kelly, assistant bugler.

Eight Scouts recently went camping. The activities included a short hike, first aid on how to treat and transport someone with a broken leg. The Scouts also worked on advancements.

Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to the Westside Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, went night skiing Feb. 5 at Snow Creek, near Weston, Mo.

Scouts who attended: Mitch McCune, Steve Norris, Ludwig Johanning, Ulrich Johanning, Tyler Baker, Justin Robertson, Ian Simmons, David Lawrence, Elliott Johnson, Newt Heston, Aaron Groene, Alan O’Neal, Patrick Carttar, Kevin Cottrell, Drew Braden, Bryce Baringer, Joe Vannicola, Grady Walker, Wolfgang Johanning, Brian Cain and Ben Vogel.

They were accompanied by Scott O’Neal, Larry Lawrence, Glenn Robertson, Mark Johnson, Jonathan Groene, Lisa Pulliam, Jenna McCune, Cammie Braden, Deb Vannicola, Scott Simmons, Jerry Ohlemeier, Shawn Norris and Kristin Ohlemeier.

Cub Scout Pack 3056, chartered to the United Methodist Church of Lecompton, had its annual Pinewood Derby on Feb. 28.

The winners were: Nathan Bays, first, Colin Korth, second, and Cameron Christman, third, Tiger Den; and Justin Smith, first, Quinten Sledd, second, and Anthony Bouhardt, third, Bear Den. Austin Sledd won the Webelos contest. Pack winners were: Nathan Bays, first; Colin Korth, second; and Isaac Christman, third.
