Hot bats lift KU past Louisville, SMS

The Kansas University softball squad celebrated returning to its home ballpark by leaving it quite a bit.

KU hit six home runs in two home-opening games Friday at Arrocha Ballpark, earning a 12-2 run-rule victory over Louisville and a 7-1 win over Southwest Missouri State at the Jayhawk Classic.

“I haven’t seen an offensive display like that from us in a long time — a long time,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said.

In the second game, Kansas received its most important hit from one least familiar with the surroundings.

With the Jayhawks leading just 2-1 in the third inning against SMS, freshman Elle Pottorf delivered a grand slam that snuck over the left-field fence with help from a Kansas gust.

“I was a little scared. I said, ‘Come on. Get going, wind,'” Pottorf said. “It was pretty exciting when it went over.”

The home run gave Kansas hurler Christina Ross enough to work with. She completed the game, allowing just one run over seven innings.

The Jayhawks set the tone for their offensive display in the first game against Louisville, smashing a season-high 14 hits in a run-rule-shortened 41/2 innings.

“When our kids are aggressive and when they’re attacking pitchers’ mistakes in the zone, that’s when we’re at our best,” Bunge said. “I think our kids have finally realized what they have to do and what mindset they have to have to be aggressive hitters.”

Kansas University shortstop Destiny Frankenstein throws to first base for a force against Southwest Missouri State. KU beat SMS and Louisville at the Jayhawk Classic on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark.

Jessica Moppin started the slugging with a solo shot in the first, and Ashley Goodrich followed with a three-run blast in the second.

Serena Settlemier and Nettie Fierros each added home runs in a seven-run fourth inning that gave Kansas a 12-1 lead.

“Louisville’s a good team, and we have a lot of respect for them.” Bunge said. “We know they have beaten some good people this year, so I was just as surprised as anyone to see that score.”

Settlemier allowed five hits and two runs to pick up the win. Six Jayhawks contributed a pair of hits against Louisville.

“We came out ready to play,” Pottorf said. “It was amazing. Everyone was taking their cuts and not holding anything back.”

Pottorf led Kansas with five hits and four RBIs in the two games, and Fierros added three hits and three RBIs.

Kansas (12-8) will play the same two teams today, taking on Louisville at 11 a.m. and SMS at 1 p.m.

“We fully expect Louisville to be very upset with themselves with that kind of a game,” Bunge said. “We don’t expect to come out and run-rule anyone (today). Both those teams will come back and be more than ready to play against us.”
