High winds during a thunderstorm Sunday night caused power outages in some parts of town.

At 9:45 p.m. power went out to about 2,400 Westar Energy customers in an area between Fifth and Ninth streets, from Kentucky Street to Sunset Drive, according to a Westar spokeswoman. All power was restored by 11:45 p.m., Westar said.

Earlier, about 1,000 customers lost power at 8 p.m. for a while Sunday night after high winds downed a power line in North Lawrence, Westar said. Power in that area had been restored by 9:20 p.m., the spokeswoman said.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews responded to several reports of downed power or utility lines during the afternoon and evening. Wind speeds Sunday averaged nearly 25 mph with gusts to 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

At 9 p.m. the first of a series of storms that had been moving through northeastern Kansas hit Lawrence.

Jefferson County was hit by a thunderstorm about 8:30 p.m. that packed high winds and hail. Power was out late Sunday in Perry and McLouth, emergency dispatchers said.
