City to consider traffic-calming devices

Lawrence City Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets ¢ Sunflower Broadband Channel 25 ¢ Meeting documents at www.lawrenceks.org

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider installing speed cushions along Bobwhite Drive between Bob Billings Parkway and George Williams Way in an effort to calm traffic in the area. Commissioners also will consider a request to install a pedestrian refuge island on Ninth Street near Schwarz Road.

Background

Both requests were recently approved by the city’s Traffic Safety Commission. But like other recently approved traffic-calming devices, city officials have not identified a way to pay for the improvements. The three speed cushions on Bobwhite Drive are estimated to cost a total of $45,000. The pedestrian island has an estimated cost of $10,000.
