Quail Run School offers pancake feed

Quail Run School, 1130 Inverness Drive, is offering a pancake feed tonight.

All-you-can-eat pancakes, sausages and orange drink cost $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. The event will be catered by Chris Cakes Inc.

The evening also includes face painting and giveaways. The meal starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

Commission discusses planning issues

Douglas County commissioners requested groups involved with planning issues develop a map to show potential sites for new industry and open spaces through 2011.

“I want to see us develop a fairly decent strategy,” said Commission Chairman Charles Jones.

Commissioners met Monday with members of the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Department, the Douglas County Public Works Department, the Douglas County Economic Development, and ECO2 — a county group charged with fostering development of industrial land and preservation of open space in the county.

The map the groups are drafting could be discussed Monday at a joint county and city commission meeting.

Police investigating missing sculpture

Lawrence Police continue to search for a small sculpture reported missing recently from the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The 13-inch-tall bronze sculpture of a pregnant woman standing in a meadow disappeared between Feb. 12 and Feb. 13.

“I think it’s pretty crappy,” Stephanie Kitten, the artist, said of the incident. The sculpture, shown at right, weighs about 15 pounds and took six months to make, she said.

The sculpture, valued at $500, was not a commissioned piece, Kitten said.

“We paid for it out of our own pocket,” she said. “We lost the client who wanted to buy it. It has been ugly.”
