Former FBI agents probing Giddens case

Three former FBI agents, who were hired to conduct background checks and various matters for Kansas University’s athletic department prior to the May 19 Moon Bar melee, have been investigating the incident for KU.

“Several schools in the Big 12, I believe, have gone to this,” KU coach Bill Self said Sunday, referring to individuals hired to look into a plethora of matters, even possibly future recruits’ backgrounds.

“Totally unrelated, after they were hired, this incident occurred,” Self said. “And Lew (Perkins, athletic director) asked them to look into this,” Self said.

Self said the agents could help KU obtain additional information regarding the fight, which included KU junior J.R. Giddens.

“We may never now the results of the police investigation,” Self said.

Indeed, results of the police investigation will not be released to the public if no charges are filed in the case regarding Jeremiah Creswell allegedly stabbing several individuals, including Giddens. The ex-FBI agents have spoken to both Giddens and Creswell.

“Remember, our decision (of whether Giddens will return to KU) may not necessarily be based on whether charges are filed,” Self said. “It will be based on all events of that evening leading up to the incident and through the incident.”

Self said no decision had been made on whether Giddens would return to the team. Giddens, who has been in Oklahoma City the past several weeks, may return to Lawrence to be checked by doctors sometime this week. He will not be available to the media upon his return. He and all KU players have been told not to comment about the matter.

Perkins, who has been recovering from surgery at his Lawrence home, had no comment Sunday.
