Plan for Sixth and SLT reviewed

Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:30 p.m. today ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets

Bottom line

Commissioners are to review plans for a major new commercial area at Sixth Street and the South Lawrence Trafficway. The project, dubbed Mercato, proposes a mix of retail, office and residential uses on 122 acres immediately north and east of the interchange of Sixth Street and the trafficway.

Background

The development has created numerous questions for planning and city staff members. The planning department is recommending that commissioners defer the development requests until their July meeting to give planners more time to study the plan. Among the concerns are how much retail space would go on the site, road access and sewer issues.

The project is proposed by an ownership group that includes Lawrence developers Duane and Steve Schwada.
