Bonds works out on field

Giants slugger says his rehabilitation work 'coming along great'

? Barry Bonds worked out before the Giants’ game Saturday, doing more resistance and agility drills in the outfield before San Francisco faced the Cleveland Indians.

Bonds has been sidelined all season while recovering from three operations on his right knee, but his intensity of working out has increased lately.

“The rehab is coming along great,” Bonds wrote on the latest entry on his Web site, www.barrybonds.com. “We are moving along at a nice pace and I’m only a few degrees from having full motion. My knee is getting stronger and although the swelling is minimal, we have to still be cautious.”

Bonds had an MRI, X-rays and blood tests on the knee Friday, which also has been infected. He will get results on his status after meeting with Dr. Robert Armstrong before today’s game. Trainer Stan Conte expects Bonds could be off antibiotics sometime next week.

Bonds said he hoped to increase his rehabilitation schedule after meeting with Armstrong, but there is still no target date for his return.

“This week, I played catch on the field, did some resistance exercises and used my heavy bat to work on a few hand drills,” Bonds wrote. “Another good sign for me is that my stamina is coming back. I’ve been spending time cycling and when the time is right, I will be outside jogging. I feel that all the pieces are coming together at a good pace for me.”

Conte said he was 99 percent sure Bonds would not travel with the team on its road trip beginning Tuesday in Minnesota.

Manager Felipe Alou did not watch Bonds’ latest workout, but has enjoyed seeing his slugger on the field in uniform this week.

Alou also said he held out hope that Bonds possibly could return in time to play designated hitter for an interleague series at Oakland beginning June 24, but admitted that option had not been discussed yet.

The Giants have struggled without Bonds, entering the day in fourth place in the NL West and 14th in the league in runs scored.

That’s a big reason why Alou’s eyes lit up when he talked about teaming Bonds with son Moises Alou in San Francisco’s lineup.

“What a difference that would make – those two guys back-to-back,” the manager said.
