Oswalt continues mastery of Reds

Houston pitcher improves to 14-0 lifetime against Cincinnati with 4-1 victory

? Roy Oswalt is making adjustments faster than the Cincinnati Reds.

Oswalt took the major-league lead for wins against one team without a defeat, improving to 14-0 against the Reds by leading the Houston Astros to a 4-1 victory Wednesday night.

Oswalt (6-6) had lost four of his last five decisions, but he was masterful against the Reds.

He was tied for the lead in victories against one team without a loss with Pedro Martinez of the New York Mets, who has a 13-0 record against Seattle. Randy Johnson of the New York Yankees is 12-0 against the Cubs. Oswalt studies all of his games against the Reds to stay ahead in the guessing game.

“I watched some film on their lineup, and they had two guys who had different stances today,” Oswalt said. “They were a little more off the plate. When they do that, you have to change something, and that opens up the outside pitches.”

The Reds were again left scratching their heads.

“You’ve got to tip your hat to him,” Ryan Freel said. “But 0-and-14 off the guy is pretty unusual. He’s got a live fastball, and the difference between his fastball and curve is 20 mph, and that’s tough to adjust to. But we’ve seen him a lot, and by now you’d think we would be able to make adjustments. Obviously we haven’t.”

Oswalt says he doesn’t think about his mastery.

“You never know about things like that,” Oswalt said. “Sometimes you match up well, sometimes you don’t. There are some guys who are .220 hitters who hit .400 off me, and there are some guys who hit well and don’t get anything off me. It’s just a difference in how they see the ball.

“I think I match up against them well, and I guess they don’t really see the ball well against me.”

Cubs 9, Dodgers 5

Los Angeles – Derrek Lee matched his career high with five hits, including a three-run homer, raising his major-league-leading batting average to .380 and helping Chicago beat Los Angeles.

Lee was 5-for-5, and Neifi Perez added four hits as the Cubs extended their winning streak to a season-high six games.

Brewers 5, Padres 2

San Diego – Carlos Lee and Geoff Jenkins homered off ineffective Brian Lawrence, and Milwaukee defeated San Diego to avoid a three-game sweep. The loss came one day after the Padres completed their best month ever by going 22-6 in May. It also ended their club-record 11-game home winning streak and their six-game overall winning streak.

Cardinals 8, Rockies 6

Denver – Mark Grudzielanek had four hits and two RBIs, and Matt Morris fought through six shaky innings to remain unbeaten in St. Louis’ victory over Colorado. Desi Relaford was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for Colorado. The Rockies had 12 hits, but couldn’t overcome another rough outing from starter Joe Kennedy and more bullpen problems to lose for the eighth time in 11 games.

Phillies 10, Giants 6

Philadelphia – Pinch-hitter Chase Utley’s two-out grand slam in the eighth inning helped Philadelphia beat San Francisco. Jimmy Rollins had four hits, Bobby Abreu and Mike Lieberthal had three apiece, and the Phillies finished with a season-high 19.

Pirates 9, Marlins 1

Pittsburgh – Rob Mackowiak hit his second career grand slam and drove in five runs, and the Pirates won their ninth in a row against the Marlins in Pittsburgh, roughing up Florida starter Brian Moehler. Florida dropped its seventh in eight games overall and extended its longest losing streak in an opposing NL city since losing nine in a row in Philadelphia in 2000-01.

Braves 5, Nationals 4

Washington – Late lineup addition Wilson Betemit hit a tying two-run homer, and Marcus Giles capped an eighth-inning rally with an RBI single, lifting Atlanta past Washington. The Nationals led 4-2 heading into the eighth.

Mets 2, Diamondbacks 1

New York – Victor Zambrano took a shutout into the ninth inning, and Jose Reyes’ speed sent New York past Arizona. Reyes had three hits and stole three bases. Mike Piazza had an RBI double, and Carlos Beltran drove in the first run with a groundout, helping the Mets (27-26) bounce back from consecutive defeats. Brandon Webb (6-2) took the loss.
