C.J. Giles, who is not completely recovered from a bruised left hip, will not travel this weekend to Colorado Springs, Colo., for USA Basketball’s World University Games tryouts.

Instead, the 6-foot-11 Kansas University forward will continue to receive treatment on his hip as he gears toward what he hopes to be a breakout sophomore season.

“Time and rest,” Giles said, asked what it would take to be 100-percent healed from the injury he suffered at USA Basketball’s Under-21 training camp July 21 in Dallas.

“I don’t want to have any injuries going into the season,” he said. “I definitely don’t want this to linger on. This offseason is critical for me to get better. I have to do what I have to do to get there.”

Giles had been healthy prior to suffering the injury, which is not believed to be serious. He says he weighs a solid 240 pounds and hopes to bulk up to 250 by season’s start.

“I’d like to average at least 10 points and at least 10 rebounds,” said Giles, who averaged 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds during an injury-plagued freshman campaign. “I think we’ll be great. It’ll be a totally different Kansas basketball team this year.

“We will not have one or two leading scorers. Our team … guys will spread out. We could have three or four guys average 10 or more a game. A lot of guys will help us win. We’re definitely going to have a lot of highlights this year.”

In all, 14 players will attend this weekend’s World University Games tryouts. Two players will be cut before the squad heads to Turkey for the World Games on Aug. 11-22.

The 14 finalists are: Bobby Jones, Washington; Greg Brunner, Iowa; Randy Foye, Villanova; Mike Gansey, West Virginia; Vincent Grier, Minnesota; Matt Haryasz, Stanford; Chris Hernandez, Stanford; Eric Hicks, Cincinnati; Jeff Horner, Iowa; Gerry McNamara, Syracuse; Craig Smith, Boston College; Patrick Sparks, Kentucky; Shelden Williams, Duke; and Brendan Winters, Davidson.

¢ Tourney on tap: Top high school basketball players, mostly blue-chippers from the recruiting classes of 2007 and ’08, will compete at the Price Chopper Kansas City Prep Invitational today through Sunday at Okun Fieldhouse in Shawnee.

One of the top juniors in the country – 6-2 Derrick Rose of Chicago Simeon High – will play for the Mean Street Express. Rose has KU, Arizona and Illinois high on his list.

Other top players at the tourney include Michael Sanchez (6-8, junior, Arkansas Hawks); Durrell Summers (6-4, junior, Detroit, The Family) and Kalin Lucas (6-2, junior, The Family).

Former Free State High standout Brady Morningstar (6-3), currently attending prep school, will play for KC Pump N Run with Blue Valley North’s Casey Crawford (6-8).

Seniors expected to compete include Jon Scheyer of the Illinois Warriors, who is headed to Duke, and Jeremiah Rivers of BABC, who is headed to Georgetown.

Two of KU’s prime recruiting targets for the Class of 2005 – Sherron Collins (5-11, Crane High, Chicago) and Darrell Arthur (6-9, Dallas) – will not be playing in the tourney.

¢ Green headed to OU?: Former KU assistant coach Jerry Green will be named director of basketball operations at the University of Oklahoma this week, according to oklahoma.rivals.com. Green has been out of coaching since leaving the University of Tennessee following the 2000-01 season. Green was fired despite winning 20 games in each of his four seasons with the Vols. He also was head coach at Oregon.
