Ambulance service passes state inspection

The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical ambulance service recently passed a state inspection with no discrepancies or deficiencies, city officials reported Monday.

The ambulance service was inspected by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services. The inspection covered a variety of regulations, including required equipment on ambulances; lights, signs and turn signals; medication; operational protocols; data collection and documentation; EMS certifications; and quality improvement programs.

Department leaders said the results of the recent review were a sign of the quality of the department’s staff.

“The outstanding inspection is a result of the dedication and commitment displayed by our firefighters and EMS personnel everyday,” said Deputy Chief Mark Bradford. “Preparing for an inspection like this doesn’t take place in a matter of days. It is the day-to-day excellence that receives this recognition.”

Senior Services offers fans to those in need

Douglas County Senior Services has a few fans available to be given to seniors who need something to help stay cool in the summer heat.

To find out about the fans, call the center (745 Vt.) at 842-0543. The fans were donated by Westar Energy.

The agency also accepts cash donations to assist eligible, low-income seniors with their summer energy bills.

Senior Services officials are asking neighbors and relatives to check on the elderly during heat waves.

“Don’t be shy about it,” said Jessie Lusher, executive director at the services center. “Even if you don’t know your neighbor well, you should still go over and check on them. Let them know you are concerned.”
