Find some air conditioning. Lawrence’s temperature soared over 100 degrees by mid afternoon and the heat index — a measurement of humidity and the air temperature — reached 116 degrees, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

“Stay cool out there. It’s toasty,” Sayers said.

Mostly sunny afternoon skies are keeping the temperature rising as this week’s heat wave continues, Sayers said.

“We’ll probably top out at 101 or 102,” he said.

On Thursday, Lawrence’s temperature hit 101 degrees, with the heat index rising to 111.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Lawrence area through Sunday night.

At 5 p.m. today, the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 102 degrees and the humidity level was 37 percent, making the heat index 111 degrees. The humidity was a little higher at 4 p.m, when the heat index reached 116. The record high temperature for this date is 107, set back in 1901. The average high for today’s date is 91.

The National Weather Service said there was a 20 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms today in the Lawrence area.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to 78 by early Saturday morning, said Tim Reith, another 6News meteorologist. But Saturday afternoon will be even hotter — the temperature will reach 103 degrees, with the heat index reaching as high as 110, Reith said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 77, with Sunday’s high climbing to 101 degrees, Reith said.

Reith gave these tips for dealing with or being out in the high heat:

— Drink plenty of fluids and stay away from alcohol and sugary drinks.

— Take frequent breaks.

— Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.

— Check on the elderly or those who don’t have air conditioning.

— Make sure pets have shade and water.
